The Sign
From Gabriel’s own lips, the spectacular was uttered
And the girl’s believing heart, with fear, did flutter
Holy Spirit overshadowed her, to give divine origin
And conceive, she did, though Mary was a virgin.
In due time, a child, Christ the Lord, was born
Angels spoke to shepherds, from glorious light, like a horn
Good tidings, great joy, to all people a Savior
Glory to God, peace, good will toward men, favor.
Shepherds found Mary, Joseph, and the babe
Tell, they did, of the heavenly host’s rave
All that heard it were taken with wonder
These things Mary kept, in her heart did ponder.
This is the sign, a babe in a manger, swaddled
Be like the shepherds who dared not dawdle
Quickly now, to the cradle of Christ, go see!
From cradle to cross, Jesus came to set free!
