The shepherd’s pen was a place that a shepherd cared for his flock. The pen was a walled enclosure made of stone or wood. The pen would have a gateway, or a door, for the sheep to enter and exit. At night, after the sheep came into the pen from pasture, the shepherd would then lay down his own body in the threshold of the doorway. No enemy or predator would be coming into the pen, except by crossing over the body of the shepherd. Thus, the sheep were kept safe by the shepherd himself.

The Shepherd’s Pen is a double entendre. Its meaning is both a pen to keep the sheep safe, but also a writing instrument of The Good Shepherd, Jesus Christ.
